How much coverage do I need?

Insurance for your car is not something you want to skimp on; if you get into an accident you want to make sure your covered for all the costs.  If you’re carrying the minimum coverage required by your state, and you get in an accident and total a $100,000 Mercedes or Bentley, you will be on the hook for everything your insurance didn’t cover.  Likewise, if you have a brand new car, you want to make sure it’s covered in case some uninsured or underinsured driver hits you.

What do all these coverage terms mean?

Auto insurance terms can seem confusing at first, but they’re really pretty east to understand.

Liability – If you’re held responsible for an accident, that is, if you’re held “liable,” for injuring a person or damaging their auto or property, this coverage pays for the damages.

Bodily Injury – If you’re responsible for injuring a person, this coverage helps pay for their medical expenses.

Collision – If your car has been damaged in a collision, this is the coverage that pays to have it repaired, or if the damage is bad enough, replaced.

Comprehensive Coverage – When we think of car insurance, we usually think of car accidents.  Comprehensive covers your car for damage caused by other sources such as falling objects, fire, some natural disasters, even theft.

Property Damage – This is just what it sounds like.  If you lose control of your car and wipe out someone’s fence, that’s property damage.  This coverage can also help protect you in case of a lawsuit.

Medical Payments – If you’re in a serious accident and you or one of your passengers are injured, this will help pay the medical bills.
